Boys drop two in Travis Roy Jr. Beanpot ...

Updated: Jan 20

A few games ago, the boys were in great shape at 5-3 and on track for a tournament bid. However, a tough 2-1 loss to Medford—despite thoroughly dominating the game—followed by back-to-back defeats in this weekend's Travis Roy Jr. Beanpot has dropped them below .500 for the first time this season, leaving them at 5-6.

Scoring goals remains a significant challenge for the Minutemen. Despite controlling the play, dominating zone time, and generating plenty of chances in both the Medford game and the opening round of the Jr. Beanpot against Newton North (a 2-1 OT loss), the team managed just one goal in each contest ... both losses.

The Newton North game delivered a particularly tough blow to the boys in navy with gold and white trim. Despite having a 4-on-3 power play in overtime, they failed to capitalize.

To make matters worse, LHS didn't notice their power play time winding down and allowed the penalized Newton North player to exit the penalty box unguarded. He then received a pass from a teammate who had stolen the puck from a Lexington player in the offensive zone, setting up a breakaway and the game-winning goal.

It was a very frustrating lapse in basic hockey awareness and a mistake that should have been easily avoided. The players on the power play should have been keeping an eye on the clock and staying alert for this exact situation. Sophomore goalie Teighan Tassinari, who made an impressive varsity debut, played exceptionally well but was left hung out to dry on the game-winning OT breakaway.

In the consolation game, Lexington came out flat in the first period, quickly falling behind Brookline 2-0. The puck gods didn’t do them any favors, as both Dylan Lane and Connor O’Leary beat the Brookline goalie cleanly, only for the posts to bail out Brookline. All season—aside from the Burlington game—the boys have shown grit and resilience when trailing, but this wasn’t one of those days. However, in a matter of moments to open the second period, a combination of poor defense, an unlucky rebound, and a soft, unscreened goal from the blue line put the Minutemen in a 5-0 hole.

Unfortunately, the team chose the wrong day to deliver their worst season performance. A lack of defensive structure, energy, and some uncharacteristic sloppy goaltending all contributed to a rough outing where seemingly everything went wrong for Lexington.

In the third period, perhaps fueled by mounting frustration, the boys finally showed some fight, ramping up their physicality and putting two goals on the board. Hopefully, that late surge can serve as a spark for their upcoming games this week.

The boys look to regroup tomorrow with a 5:00 PM home matchup at Hayden against Winthrop. Here's hoping the boys come out with a sense of desperation and play hard for all three periods and get back on a winning streak.
